Starting your own website may not be as difficult as it may seem.  The one thing that people tend to overlook, however, or don't put much thought into is choosing a domain name.  Many, falsely believe that it does not matter what domain name you choose, and often times decide on a cutesy term that means something to them and nothing to everyone else in the population.

When you are deciding on a domain name you want to make sure that the name is directly related to your business.  Whether it be about the product, the business name, or something similar.  Although, initially, most people decide on the .com version of the domain name, it is a wise idea to buy the extensions (.org, .net, and so forth) as your business begins to flourish.

Many times people don't do this simply because they don't see the need. Here is the reason: By taking an extension of your business name another business that is not run by you can give customers the impression that they are you. They can use this method to not only steal business from your site, but to lure your customers into scams, in the long run sullying your reputation as a business.

Another important reason for obtaining these extensions is that a search engine will show all these other sites, as well as yours, when a search is made for your business.  This will mislead your customers into thinking that all these sites are related to your business.  Therefore, it is important to secure your web name as this is a crucial step in securing your business.  Acquiring the other domain names is a basic and inexpensive task and is definitely worth the time.

It is important to understand the way in which the internet works, so that you can maximize your business exposure and limit your risks. If you are unsure about what to do to keep your business secure then consult a website designer, SEO Management Company or another web professional, that can help guide you through this process.
